Gluten-Free Scanner: How to Check Food Labels for Gluten
ClearaScan is a gluten-free scanner for people with coeliac disease (celiac disease in the US) and anyone avoiding gluten. Photograph the ingredient list and it checks for wheat, barley, rye and their other names.
Try everything free for 7 days, with up to 40 scans. No card needed.

Start with the coeliac list
When you set up a profile, choose coeliac disease and ClearaScan suggests a starting list of gluten sources, with its source named (Coeliac UK). Keep what applies, remove what doesn't, and add your own.

Gluten has many names
Gluten isn't always written as "gluten". ClearaScan looks for wheat and its forms (spelt, durum, semolina, couscous, bulgur), barley and malt, rye and more. See the full list of names.
"May contain" lines, such as "may contain cereals containing gluten", are shown separately so you can decide.
How labels show allergens. In the UK, the 14 major allergens must be emphasised in the ingredients list, for example in bold. In the US, the nine major allergens must be named on the label, in the ingredients or in a "Contains" statement. "May contain" warnings are voluntary in both countries.
For the coeliac in the family
Only one of you is coeliac? Give them their own Ingredient Guard and check each label for them, and for everyone else, from one photo.
Questions
Can ClearaScan tell if a product is gluten-free?
It checks the ingredient list against your list of gluten sources and shows any matches and "may contain" warnings. It can't test a product for gluten, so always check the label and look for a certified gluten-free mark if you need one.
Does it know the other names for gluten?
Yes. It looks for wheat, barley, rye and their common forms, such as spelt, semolina and malt.
Coeliac or celiac?
Same condition. Coeliac is the UK spelling and celiac the US spelling. ClearaScan works for both.
