Yuka vs ClearaScan: What's the Difference?

Yuka and ClearaScan both help you understand what's in the products you buy, but they answer different questions. Yuka rates products from a large database. ClearaScan reads the printed label and checks it against each person's own list.

What Yuka does well

Yuka has a very large product database, covering about 4 million food products and 2 million cosmetic products. It gives each product a rating out of 100, explains why, and suggests healthier alternatives when a product rates badly. Its ratings are independent, with no in-app advertising, and it has been an App Store Editors' Choice.

Where ClearaScan is different

  • It reads the ingredient list printed on the product from a photo, so the product doesn't need to be in a database, and a recipe change shows up on the label in your hand.
  • It checks against each person's own Ingredient Guard, with a separate profile for each person.
  • It doesn't score products: it shows which ingredients match the list you set.
  • Labels in other languages are translated into English and checked.
  • If it can't read the whole label, it gives no result and asks for another photo.

Questions

Is ClearaScan an alternative to Yuka?

It can be, depending on what you need. If you want a product score and healthier swaps, Yuka is built for that. If you want to check labels against your own or your family's list of ingredients to avoid, ClearaScan is built for that.

Does ClearaScan use barcodes?

No. It reads the ingredient list printed on the product, from a photo.

Can I use both?

Yes. They answer different questions, and some people use one for scores and the other for their own avoid list.
